installation failure

I am trying to install Outlook 2001 onto a new PowerBook running Mac
OSX 10.3.4. This computer will not boot into Mac OS9.

After copying the files from the disk image that I downloaded from the
Microsoft website to the "Applications (Mac OS 9)" folder, I launched
Outlook. The license agreement window came up and I clicked the
button to accept. The installation appeared to continue with the
installation of numerous files, then terminated with an alert box
containing the message "Microsoft Outlook cannot write information
needed to complete installation." I am logged into this computer as
administrator.

How do I get Outlook to complete the installation process?

First, try using Mac OS X's disk utility to repair permissions on your
disk. If this doesn't work then you may need to select your Classic
"System Folder" and verify that all permissions for folders and
sub-folders are set to read/write using the Get Info window. In
particular, Outlook should be putting files into Control Panels, Fonts
and Preferences.

Hope this helps! bill

I am also having this problem. I tried using the disk utility to fix the
permissions. I also checked the permissions on the OS9 System Folder,
Control Panels and Fonts and they are all System with admin having
read/write permissions. The account I am logged on with is an admin. Any
other suggestions?

Try creating a (Read/Write) disk image using Applications>Utilities>Disk
Utility.

I made the image file 40megs and have about 15megs free.

After the disk image is created, copy the Outlook 2001 folder from the
install image you downloaded from M$.

If you changed folder or file permissions on the System 9 folder while
trying to make Outlook work, you should "fix" the permissions using the
Disk Utility. Look under File>Fix OS 9 Permissions.

Hopefully this works for you as good as it worked for me.

Nothing short of a clean install of OS10.3.x has seemed to resolve
this issue. This seems to be happening only on OS10.3.x. Main trigger
seems to be when the system was copied from another drive or computer,
or after an upgrade of 10.2.x to 10.3.x. We have completely replaced
the system folder and downloaded Outlook 2001 from the MS site.
Permissions repair, disk utils, command line deletion of prefs
relative to classic environment, running as root. None of it seems to
resolve. The other problem is, there is no erratic behavior from any
other classic apps when this happens.

Any other ideas, folks?

Had this same issue on a brand spanking new G5. Here’s how I solved
it.

Run the installer if you haven’t already, it WILL give you the error
message about "cannot write information needed". Within the Outlook
folder find the subfolder called "outlook files". Go in there and
locate the "outlook settings" control panel. Open that control panel
and proceed to configure the email account. Once you are done try
launching Outlook. This fixed my problem, and I use Exchange Server
for our company email. Good luck!
