Invisible or Non-Breaking Paragraph Mark in Word

D

David Trammel

I used to be able to insert a paragraph marker in Word that did not
break a line. I thought it was called an "invisible paragraph mark."
Maybe I was using an older version of Word, but I can't seem to find
how to do this in Word 2003.

I have a document that has these characters in them, and I can cut the
character out and paste it into a new document. So, I know the thing
still exists. How do I insert it into my text without having to copy
it from another document.

Are you talking about a nonbreaking space (° symbol when invisibles
are on)? If so, you can insert one by pressing Control-Shift-Space.

Hope this helps

No, that's not what I need. It appears as a paragraph mark, when you
show formatting marks. I need it to be able to put two different
styles on one line of type. The paragraph mark in the middle of the
line of type does not break the line.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Are you aware that in Word 2003 (and also in 2002, I believe) you can
apply multiple paragraph styles to different parts of a single
paragraph? Highlight the words you want, then apply the style. This
won't give you the mark you're looking for, but hopefully it'll help.

I wasn't aware that you could do that. In my previous version of
Word, there was no way to do it.

But, it doesn't work with the Table of Contents. The TOC does not
recognize the second style on the line, which is what I want to appear
in the TOC, and comes up with "Error! No table of contents entries
found."

I finally figured it out. It was too simple.

I just inserted a paragraph mark where I wanted it between the two
styles, highlighted only the paragraph mark, went to the Font menu and
checked "Hidden." Argh!!

Thanks for your help, Chris.

In Word 2003 there is a new feature called Style Separator which allows
you to have two styles on one line and only the heading style text will
be picked up in the Table of Contents.

You can add the style separator onto your toolbar:
Click on the View menu, choose Toolbars and Customtize. Select the
Commands tab and from the Categories list, select All Commands. From
the Commands section, locate and select InsertStyleSeparator. Add this
command to any meny or toolbar, and then close the Customize dialog
box.
