Is it possible to recover data AFTER reinstalling WindowsXP?

My system failed and the recovery option would not function. The only way to
salvage anything was to re-install WindowsXP. The only problem is that now
all my data is GONE. Is there any way to recover any of it?

If the recovery did a full format of you disk, then all of your data was
lost if not backed up onto a separate data disk.
