Is there a way to disable Safe Mode in Office 2003?

We have a number (LOTS) of macros in our system - which is based on Terminal
Server. Some of these don't agree with each other in some cases and when
they do get angry, it causes Word to re-load in safe mode which causes more
problems that we care to deal with.

Is there a way to get Office/Word not to use safe mode?

Thanks!

Hi Aaron,

Office XP (2002) and Office 2003 generally enter into safe mode
when they encounter an error they couldn't handle or want a person
to look at. Word can also do a restart and recover documents but
it doesn't go back and cleanup old temp files that can leave things
a bit confused and they should be cleared up before restarting Word
'normally'. A lot of them can be done using Start=>Search for
files named
~$*.*;*.tmp
and clearing the %temp% folder.

When Word crashes and you disable safe mode, what alternative are
you planning/expecting for it to be able to run/recover?
If the addins macros are conflicting or otherwise broken how
are you addressing those issues?

Addressing the apparent problems is probably the root of the problem here.
Being a legal firm, we have a STACK of DOT files in the Word startup location
which all do their own thing when you start Word - building buttons and menus
etc. The obvious response to that is 'contact the vendor' but difficult to
isolate in this situation when we are using 4 different vendors.

The core of the problem is that one of those macros is causing Word to
display anywhere between 3 - 50+ characters behind what you are actually
typing. I have narrowed it down to 1 particular one, which creates a
letter/fax document. The problem is getting them to look at it seriously
when they know we have 3 other systems running at the same time!

Does anyone know what may be causing such behaviour in a macro?

This certainly was not causing an issue in the recenty upgraded from Word
2000/Windows 2000 environment and such is causing the users some angst at
this new environment.

Along with this new problem, it is evident (or possible) that thos startup
macros are not enjoying each others company and causing Word to crash -
thereby initiating Safe mode. This also happened in Word 2000 to a greater
degree indicating Word 2003 has improved it ability to avoid such issues.

In answe to your question, the main pain with Safe mode is people getting
the opportunity to disable add-ins (one of which is Hummingbird DM5) and then
wondering why it doesnt work.............

The only light I have at the end of this tunnel is knowing we are
consolidating these document creation systems - but that is a way off.

Words of wisdom on ANY of the above would be appreciated!

Aaron
