Is Word reliable?

The same Word document may look different when opened with
different versions of Word software, I need to know that
how big the difference will be at the worst case. We are
going to use the Word as the medium to exchange
information with our customers, but if the Word is not
reliable enough like the PDF, we cannot use it.
