leveling assigns resource more than allotted hours per day

Ted

I have read through many posts trying to find my question previously
answered. Unfortunately, if it's there I simply have not found it yet.

MS Project 2000
When I level a resource on either daily or weekly basis, it gets
overallocated.

I understand that overallocated means all allotted units for a resource are
assigned to multiple tasks that may occur at the same time or overlap.
Therefore, 100% units on 2 4-hour tasks will show as 200% allocated, even
though the total number of hours doesn't exceed an 8 hour working day.

However, in my case, my resources DO get leveled with more hours than are
available in the day or week. I have one resource, for example, who is the
only resource working on two different tasks. Those two tasks each are 40
hours of effort (work).

When I level that resource on a daily basis, these two tasks are schedule on
the same week. Although each task doesn't take more than 8 hours each day,
the two tasks sum to 16 hours of work for the day.

I do not have a resources assigned to summary tasks.
All constraints are "As soon as possible"
All resources use the standard calendar which is set up for 8 hour days.
All task types are fixed work, effort driven
"Can Level" is set to YES only for the resource being leveled.

I would sincerely appreciate your ideas and suggestions.

Hi,

You already mentioned a few possibilities.
In the leveling options, do you have "Level only within available slack" on
or off?
Isn't the priority for these tasks 1000?
Sure units don't exceed Max Units?

Short of this, don't hesitate to send me the file:

Jan,

You are probably right... I think I can identify a couple points where I
might have gotten confused.

1. While I know I have mostly used the "Level Now" button, it's possible
that I also selected OK occasionally. As you point out, OK does nothing and
may have contributed to my getting mixed results - that is, sometimes the
leveling improved work allocation and sometime it did not.

2. The resources that I choose to level at any one time make a big
difference in the outcome. I'm starting to follow the leveling results if I
level one resource at a time. The schedule blows up, however, if I try to
level all resources at once.

Thank you for pointing out the opportunities for missteps. I think I'm at a
point where I can close this thread.

Thanks again for the on-target help you provide.

Ted

Hi Ted,

When going into the Leveling Dialog, did you go out by clicking OK or
"Level Now"?
This is namely the most incredible pitfall Microsoft ever presented to
its users: OK doesn't do anything, it doesn't start the leveling.
To start the leveling you have to click Level Now.
When I do so, Charles' overallocations disappear allright!
So I cannot reproduce any error.
How are things at your side?
