link project date to excel date

When I link a date from Mcrosoft Project 2003 to an Excel date formatted cell
the date does not display. The link appears in the cell instead of the date.
Is there a way to make the date show in the Excel cell? I looked at the date
format from Project and created a custom format date in Excel but still no
luck.
