Link To File

Hello Folks
Please could one of you good people explain the Link To File function.
If I insert a picture with the Link To File function in a document it
inserts the picture in the document as normal, so what is the difference
between this as the normal insert file function. If I save this document and
then delete the original picture file, the picture is still in the Publisher
document, so I cannot see a difference.

Or am I completely off the mark with this logic ? . . . .

If you link the object, hypothetically when you edit the object it will also
change in Publisher. Double-click the object, the program from which it was
created will open.

Hi Mary.
I picked up on your use of the word hypothetically.

Alas I cannot get this to work. I have created a new picture in Paint.
Linked to File in Publisher, saved Publisher document, opened and altered the
picture in Paint, saved picture in Paint, and then re-opened Publisher
document.
Not only has the picture not changed, but when I double click on the
picture, it takes me to Insert Picture and not the program it was created in.
Am I going wrong or is there a fix? If anyone can guide me through, I'm sure
it is you.

HI Big Rick,
When I say hypothetically, it depends on how Publisher wants to behave. The only
graphics program I can link to is CorelDraw. I can only assume it is because
bitmaps can't really be edited in the same way. Probably it is because I haven't
a clue in what I am doing. I know the OLE doesn't work the way it did in early
versions of Publisher. The way the following article explains, rather than using
insert, object, use insert, picture, expand the *Insert*, link to file.

This article also advises installing the Photo Editor. This is all for 2003.
None of the advice in the article works for me in 2007 when it comes to
pictures.

When you try to insert a picture as a linked embedded object in an Office 2003
or 2007 Office program, the picture is not inserted

Hi again.
Thanks for the info. I did come across this article whilst reading up on why
Publisher cant handle transparency printing very well. I do have Corel Draw
installed but am a *very* novice user when it comes to using it, so I think I
will just not have to bother with this 'feature'.
