Linking

Hi,

I have the following question, lets say I have a new project namely:

1) Project_Name
2) Summary1
3) Task1
4) Task2
5) Task3
6) Summary2
7) Task1
8) Task2
9) Summary3
10) Task1

If I want all the work on Summary1 & Summary2 to start at the same time
should the proper way of linking these items be by linking Summary1 &
Summary2 with (SS) type linkage? Is that a proper way of doing that linkage?

Also, I would like Task2 in Summary2 to be linked to the next process
either( Summary3 or Task1 of Summary3)? Is this correct linkage? Becuase if
I link (8) and (9) would that mean that all the tasks in item (9) be done
only after item (8) if I have a (FS) link?

The bottom question is: Are the links I'm asking for your review
appropriate in PM?

Trevor,

Thank you for your response. So based on the info below, would you mind
clarifying how to use the Start and Finish summary within is Big Summary?

Also, how would the tasks within the 2 summaries in each big summary be
linked to outside big summaries?

ie.

1) Project_Name
2) Summary1
3) Summary1 Start Milestone, 0D
4) Task1
5) Task2
6) Task3
7) Summary1 Finish Milestone, 0D

8) Summary2
9) Summary2 Start Milestone, 0D
10) Task1
11) Task2
12) Task3
13) Summary2 Finish Milestone, 0D

I can see Task1,2,3 (4,5,6) of Summary1 being linked to (3) as a milestone.
However, how is it linked to summary milestone (7)?

And could (2) be linked to (8)? either tasks or milestones?

Thanks.

Hello jamie,

Pardon me for bumping in but it appears as though Trevor may be offline.

I would link "Summary 1 Start Milestone" as the predecessor to Task1 at the
least. If Task1 is the predecessor to Task2 or Task3, there is no need to
link the Milestone as the predecessor.

I would ensure that "Summary 1 Finish Milestone" is the successor either
directly or indirectly the Tasks1, Task2, and Task3.

If all tasks (1, 2, & 3) must be completed before any task in Summary2 can
be started, then link "Summary 1 Finish Milestone" as the predecessor to
Summary2 Start Milestone.

However, if Task1 in Summary2 can start after Task1 in Summary1 is finished,
you can create the relationship across the grouping.

Do not link any summary task to any other task -- summary or not.

I hope this helps.
