Long documents

Does MSWord have a process where a long document can be
broken into "chapters" and then reintegrated into one
large, complete document, with Table of Contents, Index,
biblio, etc?

Often find that when doing manuals with graphics in them,
they often get messed up over time (with revisions or
upgrades to the software) and we spend hours trying to get
them looking good. Very, very time-consuming.

Thanks.

I compose a lot of long documents, really putting MS Word to the test. I still like it MUCH better than WP.

I separate all my "chapters" with section breaks, next page. Then you can start at the end of the document, inside the header and take off the "keep with next". This allows me to put the Chapter number and Title in the Header for each Chapter. You can also get different effects by using File\Page Setup\Layout\Different First Page for each Section/Chapter. It gives me a much more professional look and using the automation features like headings saves tons of time typing Table of Contents and Figures.

Have fun, I find that long documents using MS Word's automation options separates the beginners from the power users. It's not that hard to be proficient, like anything else, it just takes a little practice!

You can insert chapter number and title without unlinking headers by using
the StyleRef field.
