Loosing emails in outlook when downloading them

Using outlook 2000 When i do a send and receive in
outlook to get my emails it says its receiving them and
then the program freezes and says not responding so i do
a crtl alt delete (using windows xp pro)and End Program
then i open outlook again and i have lost the emails i
was downloading. Can anyone help?
