Lost tasks

I have an old MSProject created with Project 2000. I know there are about
250 listed tasks; however, when I open it, there are only the first nine.
When viewing the file with 'notepad', I can see a number of other task names
that I know are towards the end of the project (e.g. system test, client
acceptance, etc). Is there anyway of recapturing or rebuilding this
information?

Have you got any filters applied?

Under 'Project" on the menu bar, Filters is set to 'Filtered for: All Tasks'.

Also, looking at the baseline, the project duration shows 244 days; however,
teh fist subtask only shows 5 days (which is about right). Somehow, the link
to the rest of the tasks has been dropped and they will not display anywhere.

Ideally, I would like to capture the entire project as I used to use it as a
template and estimator for software development. At a minimum, I would like
to capture the task names.

Thoughts?

I have an original copy of MSProject that I've reinstalled on one computer.
It has been updated with all of the current ServicePacks and patches. I also
have a copy of MSProject 2007 at work. Finally, I've had associates with
MSProject 2003 as well as other project planning tools ... all come up with
the same result. Only the first 9 tasks appear.

Other statistics: File size is 277,504 bytes (compared to an 'internal
development project template' that is 221,696 bytes, containing 185 tasks).
Last Date Modified is 01/2002 (compared to 08/01 for the Internal Development
Project Temaplate')

Note: I'm comparing the two templates as they were created at about the
same time using the same tools.

Hi Steve,

I suppose the tasks are not somewhere down the bottom? If blank tasks are
there, the ID column will have a number. Try a Tools/Options.../View tab
and select the Project summary. Does that span all the missing tasks?

No luck. The tasks are neither at the bottom nor do they show when I turn on
the Project summary under the View Tab.

Thanks.

The short answer is "no". I thought maybe there was view that would show
only the baseline, but that didn't work either.

Dear Microsoft Office Project user,

From the last reply, I understand you are looking at viewing the baseline
information of your schedule.

I suggest you change your view to Gantt Chart view with Baseline table (or)
Tracking Gantt view with Baseline table.

Please let us know if this helps.

Again, the information that I'm looking for is not in this view.

The issue is NOT an issue of know which view to open, but is an issue of a
hidden data within the file. Whatever internal 'code' is required to show
the tasks is missing.

Dear Microsoft Office Project user,

Thanks for sharing the schedule.

I opened the schedule in Microsoft Office Project 2003 and find it displays
only 9 tasks. I observe the Project Statistics displays Baseline Work is
2,560 hrs, whereas there no tasks that account for this work.

Since, you are looking at the reusing the task list of the schedule, I
suggest you open the schedule in Microsoft Office Project 2000 and copy /
export the task list to Excel. Then, you can use the Import wizard of
Microsoft Office Project 2003 (File > Open, Select the excel file) to map the
fields in Excel to fields in the schedule.

Please let us know if this helps.

I have opened the file in Project 2000, and have the same results ... only
the 9 listed tasks.

Note: I have viewed the file using 'Notepad' and can see some of the other
task names, that's how I know that they are still there.

Hi Steve,

I've downloaded your project and all I can add to what others has said
is that in my opinion, the file is quite seriously corrupted. I saved
the project as a project database without difficulty but then could not
re-open the file. The difference in Project start date and the
scheduled dates for the task lead me to believe that there is something
seriously wrong. The project has also been used with the workgroup
messaging features in project and there are still responses pending. The
file may have been a master project at some point with inserted projects
and a baseline saved but the inserted tasks (projects?) are now gone.

My recommendation is to start from the beginning and not try to recover
any information from this file. If you can make sense of the mess that
Notepad shows for coming up with task names, fine, but I'm not sure it's
worth the effort.

Just my thoughts.

I have tested out your situation in MSP 2003. I created 3 tasks and saved
the file. I then reopened the file and deleted the 3rd task. Then re-saved &
closed the file. I then opened this file in notepad & I could see this 3rd
task in this file. It seems that even though you have deleted the data in
MSP the deleted "data" shows up in notepad.

Sorry, but it seems that the data has been deleted.
