mail merge help

I am trying to merge data into a Publisher 2002 postcard
document. It is not address fields, but other random
information. From Specfic Cells in an Excel Document.
When I try to setup my fields it gives me all these F1,
F2, F3 and so on fields. How am I suppose to know what F
number goes with what Excel column or cell?

The F number refers to the order of the columns. F1 is the first column, F2
the second, etc.

I know I am asking alot but, is there a way to tell the
import field in Publisher to only import the data if it is
a certain letter within that Excel cell? For example it
is possible for the letter in the cell to be P, M, or R
and I only want to import that line if the cell reads an R

Thanks for your help.

I'm basing my responses on Pub 2003 because you didn't specify which version
you are using.

There are a couple of things you could do. After you have selected your data
source (Step 2 of 5), you could clear the boxes to the left of the entries
you don't want. Or when you get to the preview (Step 4 or 5), you can
"exclude this recipient". If your data source has less than 30 or so entries
that's not too bad but if you have over 200, it could be a pain in the
tusche.

In Step 2 of 5, you can search for certain entries. That may be the way for
you to go. If your data source is an Excel spreadsheet, couldn't you do a
sort at that point and only export the data you want? (My knowledge of Excel
is a bit lacking. My husband is the Excel guru in this household. I turn to
him when I need help with that program.)
