Mail Merge with an Underline

Background
I am doing a bunch of certificates and on the certificates there is
tabbed ledger with an underline so the name could go on top of it.

Problem
I have an excel spreadsheet with fields ready for a mail merge to go.
When I go to insert the fields the underline goes away. I guess it is
because it overwrites it.

I tried putting the mail merge fields in a text box, but it causes
word to generate VB errors when trying to merge.


Any suggestions?
