Mail Merge

I am using Mircosoft Office Word 2003. I have gone through as per the instructions to set up a new mail merge document. When I reopen it and then go to mail merge recipients list and click edit I get the following message 'This operation cannot be completed because of dialog or database engine failures. Please try again later'

What am I doing wrong, can anyone help me please?

Pleasse provide us with what format your data source is.

Is it a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, or an Access
database?

Are you able to open the data source from it's "native"
application? (Word/Excel/Access)
