mail merge

I have followed the steps that microsoft provides, however, when I go to
preview my recipients into my letter, nothing shows up except the "address
block" and "greeting", but not the actual names and addresses. I have
retrieved and imported an existing letter into the merge along with the
recipient list. When choosing the list a "table" appears with 3 choices, I
don't know what they mean. I clicked on the first one, and my list appears.
When clicking on the last one...a blank grid appears. Is there something
that I'm missing that is preventing me from getting the data onto the merge
for preview and printing? Thanks for your help!
