Mail merging data from Excel file

I have an excel file containing $ amounts. I am merging
that data into a Word document. When I merge the data,
all of the formating is lost and numbers print without
comma separators or $ signs. I have tried it
with "preserve formatting when updating" option selected
and not. If I try to merge files that were not created
using XP, the formatting is fine. When I use files that
have been created since XP has been loaded, the formatting
gets lost even when I save as Excel 97.
