When is the fabled maintanence release for Publisher that will fix all
of these page size/order etc. problems actually coming out?

That's a good question. Unfortunately none of us are privy to that
information.

I found via google this blog which indicates the current plan is to
release the Office 2007 SP 2 between Feb - Apr 2009:

There will be enhancements in the service pack for Publisher. Many of the page
setup problems will be solved. Stay tuned...

On past performance though, I wouldn't assume there will be any fixes or
enhancements for Publisher in it. After all, there are bugs and deficiencies
in Publisher 2007 which have been there since at least the 2000 version, and
there doesn't appear to be a Publisher 'team' within Microsoft any more, as
the referenced post illustrates. It seems likely that the product is being
quietly dropped.

There is a Publisher team but it's not as big a team as some of the other
apps. I just wish they were more vocal.

Ditto just about every other Microsoft product. Windows Vista has the
Add Font dialog from Windows 3.1, almost as old as me.

Publisher has a team, it just doesn't have a team blog.
It seems likely that the product is being quietly dropped.

Whilst I can't second-guess Microsoft's future plans, and have no
information about the subject (nor could I share it if I did, most
likely), all the noises I've heard indicate that Publisher still has a
future.

Does it include any programmers? What on earth are they doing?

Why can't they fix some of the long standing and often very simple but
irritating bugs - like the fact that text boxes never flag an overflow if
there's only one line of text in them and the text doesn't fit (it just
slices bits off the text)?

Not to mention some of the newer deficiencies - like not being able to save
a shape to a pdf format file, for instance, or to import a pdf graphic.

Thankfully, given the increasingly capable Scribus, Publisher seems likely
to become an unnecessary irrelevance even if MS don't officially drop it
anyway. If they had any gumption in this area, perhaps they would improve it
considerably to create a serious competitor for Indesign & Quark Xpress. At
the current price they could not only create a viable product, but could
also clean up in the professional design marketplace.

Some folks say the same about Office vs OpenOffice.
