Manhours by Task

I'm trying to assign manhours by task not duration. Example if a one task
takes 100 manhours and/or 3 days because I place 4 men on the task, the next
task may take 100 manhours and/or 5 days because I place 2 men on the task.
I don't want the manhours to be the driving factor for the duration. Then, I
would like to run a report that could tell me based on the number of manhours
I asked for per task how many manhours there will need to be spent per week
of the project, telling me how many men I will require on the project to
complete this work throught the project.

DanS,
First of all, you should be aware of the various task types used by
Project. The default type is Fixed Units but there is also a Fixed Work
and a Fixed Duration type. The default task type can be changed under
Tools/Options/Schedule tab and individual tasks can be of different
types. In addition, Fixed Units and Fixed Duration can be either effort
driven or not effort driven.

Rather than go into the details of the differences between these task
types I suggest you first go to Tools/Options/Schedule tab and click on
the Help button. I think it will help you understand how to set up the
scenario you want. Then if you still have questions, post again.

I would change the task type to "Fixed Work", and assign generic resources.
Beware that adding resources to a Fixed Work task divides the remaining work
equally among all resources on a task, since the "Effort Driven" box is
checked and grayed out by design. You may have to adjust the individual work
hour assignments to get the desired task duration as you add resources.
Adjusting assignment units can also drive task duration.

Then run a "Who does What When" report under the "Assignments..." category,
edit the crosstab to show "1 Weeks". Hope that is what you are looking for.
