Master Documents and Sub Documents

Hi

I have a problem.

What I have is a set of documents. These documents as to merged together
into a big document. However some users will want more than one copy of a
document inside the big document. The reason why this needs to be done is
that each page of the big document needs to have a unique page number that
can be recorded by the person who sends the document out. Like s tracking
number.

I have tried to look for information about using subdocuments in VBA but can
find very little, does anybody know of any sources or examples of this being
done.

This is _not_ Master Documents and Sub Documents as those terms are used in
Word. "Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature"
that not only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with
the limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:
http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm> for information on the
Master Document feature and workarounds. (This page also has a link to Steve
Hudson's chapter on how he gets Master Documents to work.) See <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm> for more
information on what goes wrong. I think you are talking about documents and
parts of documents.

That said, how would you go about restricting which page a person sends out?
Would you be better served with a header/footer field showing the user name
or initials? Convert the document to .pdf so that the field would be fixed
in what the recipient gets.

Otherwise, you can use bookmarks and REF fields to replicate some of a
document (i.e. a page) in other locations in the document. You may also want
to look into online forms (protected). None of this is vba (visual basic for
applications) but is built into Word already.
