Master Project File and Resource Pool

ARBrock

Good morning,

I work for a residential remodel company. We generally have 30-50 projects
running at any given time. I have created a project file for each project,
and to help manage/report I created a consolidated "master" project.

I've been asked to create a "resource pool" to share resources between all
these projects. In the training class I took, the resource pool was a
completely seperate file.

Can I put the "resource pool" in the master project file instead of creating
a seperate file?

Thanks,

AR

Hi AR,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Yes, you can. But master projects are really only temporary things that
have placeholders for each of the inserted projects. Thus, it is cleaner or
better to have a separate file for a resources pool and share each project
with that. Then, when you create a master, you can insert any number of the
projects leaving the pool intact. Is there a particular reason for what you
want to do?

Thanks for the response Mike!!

I am trying to find solutions for our newly implemented MS Project -- but I
want the solutions to have as minimal of an impact on the project
coordination team while we are working out the kinks in the system. I have a
bunch of data in multiple locations (most of it is housed in excel right now
-- some stored as data some stored like a excel converted into a desktop
publishing program... I'm just trying to find a way to get it consolidated
into one place (which is the reason I asked about putting it into the
project).

I guess I should also say that we bought the server product... so is
creating a seperate "resource pool" the best way to help us make the
transition into using the server product?

Hi AR,

I would say having a resource pool is the simplest way when working with a
coordination team, as it least likely to duplicate names, as the users can
select the correctly spelled resource from the pool. However, if you're
going to use Project on a server, try posting on the server newsgroup.
