Max units assignments for modeling purpuses

Gil

Hi all,

I want to use generic resources for modeling and checking how many
resources I will need for my project:
Let us say that I have my plan, and in the resource sheet I have
(among other resources) DEVELOPER, with 100% max units. After I assign
tasks to the developer and level him, I get the finish date of the
project.
Now, I want to check when will the project finish if I will have 2
developers. What is the best practice in this case? I thought to
change DEVELOPER max units to 200% in the resource sheet, but then
what? do I have to reassign all the tasks again and then level
resources again to get the new finish date? Is there a short way of
doing that?
After changing Max units to 200% I tried reassigning DEVELOPER to the
same tasks again but the assignment units was still 100%...
And lets say all the assignments are now 200%. Shouldnt Project now
AUTOMATICLY change start dates of tasks and therefore the start day of
the project should be earlier then before, or do I have to first
"level resources" in order for that to happen?

Thanks for helping me..
(using Project 2007)

Project won't change assignment rates on tasks for you during the leveling
process, so setting max units won't do anything for you directly.
My advice would be to set the task type to "fixed work" and to vary the
resource units on the task from 100 to 200. You can do this on multiple tasks
most easily by selecting all the tasks for that resource (filter first if you
have to) and then press SHIFT+F2 to display the task information dialog box.
Go to the resource tab and assign the resource at the new percentage. It will
then apply to all the selected tasks. After that you can set the new max
units and re-level.

Thanks very much...
Just another quick one:
Sometimes I see resources in resource sheet view that are in red, but
the "this resource should be leveled by..." indicator is not there.
What does it mean? I see it even if I work offline and unchecking the
"load summary resource assignments" check box.

It means that the resource is overallocated at less than the level set in
the Tools > Level Resources , "Look for overallocations on a...." basis. If
that option is set for "Week by Week" any resource who is overallocated on an
hourly or daily basis will still be red but if the overallocation was spread
over a week, the resource is okay, so Project does not display the flag.

I hope this helps.
