I publish a local newpaper (tabloid size, print area 350mm deep by 265mm
wide) - can Publisher handle this size?

Thanks, Mary. I'm sure that Publisher will allow me to print out a reduced
copy on A4 for visual purposes, too? Is there a facility to "tile" print a
full-size page onto A4 sheets - I can do this with Pagemaker, but my reason
for possibly buying Publisher is to open access wider to external inputs from
local clubs and groups, who aren't very print-oriented, hereas many of them
know about Publisher.

It depends on your printer driver as to whether you can print in a reduced size. Some
printers have a "Zoom Smart" function or the equivalent.

Converting your publication to a PDF may be one solution. Are you wanting your
recipients to be able to edit the newspaper?

There are free PDF writers around; you can reduce your document within the save as.
This is one free PDF writer; there are many more...

So let me sum up! If I buy Publisher, I can take-in pages or half pages which
have been produced and edited by other people in their Publisher-based
systems, and assemble these into a tabloid paper in a native Publisher
environment, without making any software changes. I can then use distiller to
make PDF's of my pages, which I can then send to my contract printer, who can
run out PDFs directly onto litho plates. The size that I'm outputting on my
own printer, which will be purely for assessment of appearance and possibly
for proof-reading, will be subject to the capacities of my printer driver to
produce a reduction - this facility isn't in Publisher. If I attempt to print

I'll get?

If you don't select any special features in your printer driver, you will
get a tile printed tabloid page across 2 or 3 A4 pages.

If you do use a printer driver feature such as Zoom Smart, then the document
will be scaled to fit the A4 page.
Other programs that allow the same thing include FinePrint

Excellent - that's exactly the outcome I want, so I'll have to rush off and
buy Publisher! Thanks for all your help, Mary and Ed.
