messages showing in "in-box" but nothing there?

This one has me stumped. All of a sudden a few days ago,
my in-box started showing that I had new messages in it
but when I would go in to it there was nothing there.
Even when there were new messages, after I read them all
and deleted them it still showed I had new unread
messages remaining?

What's with this??
