Microsoft Office and my computer

My new computer came ready to run with winXP and microsoft
office xp professional.

The OS and the office software were pre-installed and came
with the computer which I purchased via computer shopper
from a company back east.

ALSO with my computer came another package and in it was
a box that says:

Microsoft Office Basic 2003. It looks like a simple white
box and contains a CD and a small pamphlet that says: word
2003, excel 2003, and outlook 2003.

I'm wondering if I'm supposed to install this product "on
top of" my already installed office XP professional?

It's a bit strange, I'm wondering if this is what is
called OEM version of office? I haven't seen a product
from microsoft retail calling itself "basic." The only
product I've seen retail is
called "standard" "academic" "professional" or "developer"

It looks like the office I have operating now (officeXP)
contains 2 more programs (access, and powerpoint.)

But now I'm left with a dilema - I'm assuming that they
wanted me to install the "basic" office right on top of
the office professional XP that is currently running in
the system.

My question: how do I go about this?

Can I safely install the office basic on top of my office
professional? Will I loose functionality of the other
programs? Will the CD even allow me to install this
product and then go ahead and upgrade the outlook, word,
and excell components to 2003 level?

I guess my computer vendor was kind enough to give me the
full office pro XP - and I guess "threw in" the
office "basic" as a bonus --

Any ideas on how I should proceed?

Thank you for your kind support,
Thank you and sincerely,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

MS Office 2003 Basic Edition is the new member of
the MS Office Suite family. It is a pre-installed
(OEM) only product

http://microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/basic.mspx

You can use a custom setup and have Access 2002 and
Powerpoint 2002 retained from your Office XP
Professional Edition, or choose to have both the
Office XP/2002 and the Office 2003 editions installed
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828956&FR=1
(except you can only have one edition of Outlook).

If it's the OEM Office XP Edition that you have then
it should also have Publisher 2002 with it on a separate CD.
First place to check though is in Add/Remove Programs
in the Windows Control Panel to see what is listed
as being installed.

You may also want to check with the PC supplier to
see if you were supposed to get an Office 2003 upgrade
edition that matached the Office XP edition you have.
