Forgive me for sounding dumb - I am a rank beginner.
I have just downloaded the disk Office 2000 onto my p.c.
It shows up in the control panel - but not in Programs
from the Start menu, and I don't know how to put the icons
on my desktop. Can someone please help me?

Did you run the disk and click on setup.exe? How did you "download" it onto
your computer?

So, you clicked on the "Install" option, right? Did it take you through the
steps to put in your installation ID number, choose what to install and
where? Did it prompt you to reboot your machine?

Office will install and put its icons on the start menu at the bottom. You
can drag and drop them to your desktop from there.

You may have missed the option to create the shortcuts, or
clicked someting unknowingly that kept them from being made.

Use Explorer to Search for winword.exe file. When
you find it, highlight it with your mouse, and right click
on it.
Then in the drop down menuy that appears, select Send To
and then select Desktop (create a Shortcut) or words similar
to that; not sure I remember them exactly.

Now you have an icon to use at last to start it. Next you
can use Start ; Settings ; Taskbar and Start Menu, and drag
your new icon into that menu. I think you'll know where it
belongs when you see it.

HTH. C'mon back if I've confused you; didn't mean to <g>.
