I wonder if anyone knows if there is a solution to following :
I have an old file I created years ago in Publisher - I now have Publisher
97 in my laptop but when I try to access the file I can see it okay, but get
error message "Publisher cannot load files from a different version" I
presume I created it in an even older version but is there a way I can get
round this ? I'm a real technophobe and have no idea how to resolve this but
desperately need the file if if at all possible - thanks for any help you can
give.

If you want to upload the .pub file to
the following site and post the download
link here...I'm certain that someone will
have a look at it.

"YouSendIt"
http://www.yousendit.com/

All you have to do is enter an e-mail
address in the Recipient field and
click the browse button to select the
file you wish to upload. Then click the
"Send It" button.

The next screen that appears will give
you the download link. Just copy/paste
it into your reply to this newsgroup..

If you have Norton, it could keep you from opening the old file.
How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329820/en-us

You will get this message if the Publisher file was created in a newer version
of Publisher. Publisher 97 will open 2.0, 1.0 and 95.

Sounds like a challenge...

I thought new versions would open older versions, but not the other way
around?

I'm thinking maybe it really isn't a Publisher file? Or was saved as
something else? What did they have before Office 97, Office 95? (the first
one I saw was 97, I wanted to buy it but all I could get was 2000 by then)

Who knows...it was never uploaded for inspection.

I have Pub 2.0a from Windows 3.1 days...I thought
maybe it would open the older file. Can you believe
the *huge* program came on 5 floppies?

I have the very first Publisher (1.0), it came on three 5¼ floppies. Microsoft
ran a contest on one's use of the program. My entry was I used the box for my
crayons. Microsoft sent me an acrylic coffee mug.

5¼ floppies....they were great weren't they )
I always expected mine to self destruct (I had
a few games on them) but they were surprisingly
dependable.

Do you still have the mug?

I have the mug. It says "Microsoft Solution Series" in gold print. In smaller
print, "Software for People, not computers."

I've had good luck with floppies. I still have my Apple computers; every now and
then I will boot them up. We played a lot of IF games, Infocom mostly. Still
have all the Apple software. One of our games sold recently on eBay for $1200.
Who knew??

I suspect that mug would be quite
collectible.

$1200? Wow! Maybe my junkshelf
is a retirement investment )

I'm thinking I purchased Pub 2.0a in '93 or '94.
My Windows 3.1 machine had a *huge* 70 MB
hard drive )
