Microsoft Word 2008

Every time I log off WORD 2008 I receive this message:-

"A file error has occurred. Check your network connections or make sure the disk is properly inserted and not defective. (Normal.dotm)"

What does this mean?

Hi owalston,
Did you by chance specify a network path in Prefs | File Locations for your
templates? It sounds like Word is trying to update or create your Normal on
close and it can¹t be found (drive not connected?)

Thanks,

Curt

Thanks for your suggestion. Yes, it appears that I have specified a network path in Prefs/File locations for my templates. But this was a mistake. How do I delete this and start from a blank again?

Sorry to be so stupid.

With Word closed, delete the

~:Library:preferences:com.microsoft.Word.plist

file (where ~ is your home directory).

Or you can just set it back to the proper directory in preferences.

I have tried this but it still doesn't work. Having looked again in the preferences I see that it is not actually a network address that is specified for the template location. So back to square one..

My next suggestions are as follows:
1. Check the permissions on ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/User
Templates/Normal.dotm. Ensure you have write access to the file and the
folder.
2. Try moving or deleting the above file
3. Try moving or deleting (if it exists) ~/Documents/Microsoft User
Data/Normal
4. Try moving or deleting ~/Library/Preferences com.Microsoft.Word.plist

Let me know if any of these remedy the problem.

Thanks,

Curt

1. There is no file library/Application support/Microsoft/user
3. There is no file /Documents/microsoft user data
4.There is no file /library/preferences com.microsoft.word.plist

What do I do now? I am baffled?

Are you sure you're looking in the fight places? The slashes indicate a new
folder, so the first would be roughly:
Macintosh HD
Library
Application Support
Microsoft

Are you sure you're looking in the fight places? The preceeding tilde (~)
symbol is an indicator that you should be looking in your home directory.

So, the first would be roughly: Macintosh HD > Users > (your name) > Library >
Application Support > Microsoft > Office > User Templates > Normal.dotm.

Bingo.
I found the last two files and deleted them. Now everything is ok. Thanks a lot.
