Why do i have to but it when it was standard on my other computer?

I have windows xp

Microsoft Word is not part of any version of Microsoft Windows. Your old
computer may have had Word preinstalled on the hard drive by the computer
manufacturer, but it was not free... the cost of the Word program was
included in the total price of the computer.

Assuming you meant "buy" instead of "but"...

Word and the other parts of Office have always been separately purchased
software, not part of Windows. When you bought the other computer, Word or
Office may have been "bundled" by the computer vendor, but that just means
that the cost of the software was hidden in the overall cost of the
computer -- you did buy it (unless the vendor was engaged in software
piracy).

If you don't want to or can't pay for Word, you can try the free software
OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org).

Jay and g-n-o have explained why you don't get Word or Office free. If you
just need Word and not the other Office apps, the absolutely cheapest way to
get it is as part of Works Suite 2005 (see
http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=001). The
last time I looked Amazon.com was selling it for $89, with free shipping,
and Microsoft is offering a $20 mail-in rebate through January 1, 2006,
which reduces the effective price to $69. In addition to Word 2002, you get
Works, Encarta, Money, PictureIt! Premium, and Streets & Trips.
