Modeling Error Recovery

Situation
While testing the Project Server, a test model was created through the
Project Modeler. The inclusion of all projects with this operation caused
the server to redline on the process utilization indicated through Task
Manager. The portions of Project Web Access inaccessible or would not
display. To recover from this, I attempted several steps and eventually the
right combination of steps resolved the problem.
Below are recommended steps to recover the Project Server. These steps are
written in phases. The service may be recoverable after a specific phase so
test before proceeding to the next steps.

Phase 1 Restart Project Server
1. Log onto Project Server using the Project Server service local account.
2. Open Task Manager to view processor utilization.
3. Open Computer Management by right clicking the My Computer icon and
selecting Manage.
4. In the Computer Management console drill down to Services and
Applications | Services.
5. Locate and Stop the following services:
a. Project Server Connector Service
b. Project Server Schedule Processing Service
c. Project Server Session Mgr Service
d. Project Server Tracing Service
e. Project Views Notification Service
6. Locate and Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service.
7. Start the Project Server services listed above.
This may provide access to the Project Server. If this works, open Project
Web Access’ Project Center and enter into the “Model Projects with the
Portfolio Modelerâ€. Delete the effecting model. If the processor utilization
pegs at 100%, continue to Phase 2.

Phase 2 Restore Database
The configurations for the model are stored in the Project Server database.
The database is backed up every hour with transaction log back ups. The
restore is straight forward using the Enterprise Manager on the SQL server.
1. Stop the Project Server services as listed above and restart the World
Wide Web Publishing service.
2. Log onto SQL Server via Remote Desktop using the Project Server service
local account.
3. Open Enterprise Manager located in Programs | Microsoft SQL Server
4. Open Service Manager located in Programs | Microsoft SQL Server.
5. With the Service Manager, stop and start the SQL Server service and the
SQL Agent.
6. In Enterprise Manager, drill down to the Project Server database.
7. Right click the database and select Properties.
8. In the Options tab, select the Restrict Access check box and click OK
9. Right click the database and select All Tasks | Restore Database.
10. In the Restore Database window, the recommended backups are selected to
restore the database to the latest backup. You will have to estimate when
the model was configured to restore the database prior to that point.
Deselect the backups that are after the estimated time.
11. Click OK.
12. After the restore, the database will be operational.
13. On Project Server, start the Project Server services .
