moving macros from one Word document to another

I am writing a long document on my laptop
I have created several formatting macros
I moved the document to the desktop. The macros were not there
I used the tools>macros>organizer to copy my macros from my document on my laptop to my document on my desktop
I was able to see the macros had been copied into the target document on the desktop. But I could not run them
The error message says the macros are disabled. Click help
Clicking help did not work
I checked the newsgroups. Some fellow said the macro security settings should be lowered. I set them to the lowest. That did not work
I tried using the organizer to move the macros from the laptop normal.dot to the desktop normal.dot. I was not allowed to do that
I got the macros working by copying the normal.dot from my laptop to the normal.dot on the desktop
What is the recommended way of moving macros around? Is there a way to do that incrementally so that I can add my new macros to old ones without overwriting the old ones?
