MS Office Uninstall Problem

Help.....

I recently added a larger HD to my computer. I copied all
of the contents of the old drive to the new one using
Western Digitals Copy Program (which worked great) except
for one thing -> Office.

When I got the machine up and running from the new C
drive, all of the Office Icons were bad links. I could
launch the program manually and they work fine, but the
links were dead. No big deal, or so I thought.

But then I tried other things. Upgrading Office,
reinstalling, uninstalling. Nothing works.

MS Update and the Installer claim they are looking for a
Installer Package in order to uninstall or upgrade, or
even repair.

I guess in the creation of this new HD, I lost this
installer directory.

Anyway, any idea at all how I can recover from this? Can
I start deleting files and directoies, some tool I can
use, what?

I am stuck and I have found no information or detail
anywhere on what I can try.

Thnaks for any help in advance....

Susan,

Your correct, I neglected to do that.
I am running Windows XP Pro and MS Office XP.

Like many other users, I can not uninstall nor upgrade.
Gets to 52% and coughs out the error.

I tried all of the the other suggestions you provided on
other postings like mine and I did try the Installer
clean-up as you suggested.

I reinstalled from my CD's and manually performed the
upgrades. However, it is still not working.
Word, Excel, launch and run ok. But they are
not "installed" as far as Windows and other programs are
concerned. For example: MS Active Sync for iPaq PDA no
longer recognizes Outlook. Adobe Acrobat can not run
within Word, etc.

Any other idea's would be awesome. I am really despirate.

Thanks Susan,
Dave

Hi, Dave,

If Help | About in Word indicates that your application is patched, then
you're good to go. It's annoying that the Office Update site is failing for
so many folks, but it's not likely your system's fault. As long as you can
apply the patches, even manually, then that's what's important.

You may need to re-install ActiveSync and Acrobat, since the Office apps
they're integrated with were re-installed. Re-installing those add-ins
should work.

I understand how the add-ins might not recognize the re-installation, but
when you say that they're not "installed" as far as Windows is concerned,
what evidence is Windows giving you of that?

Susan,

I did reinstall MS Active Sync and it still does not
work. I have not re-installed Acrobat, but I will try
that over the weekend.

As for the "Office is not Installed" comment. That is a
message box that pops up on Active Sync when it tries to
sync to Outlook.

Here is the exact text of the message:::
"Microsoft Outlook is no longer installed, so ActiveSync
cannot run. To continue synchronization, reinstall
Microsoft Outlook...."

Thanks again for your help... I'll let you know what I
find out this weekend.

Susan,

An Update...

I reinstalled Adobe and now it works from within Office.
That is the good news. The bad news is, I reinstalled MS
ActiveSync and it still won't work (sync) with Outlook.

I have:
Word 2002 SP-2
Outlook 2002 SP-2
Exel 2002 SP-2
MS ActiveSync 3.7.1 - The latest

Any more idea's

Did you try to uninstall ActiveSync, then re-install it, then reboot?

I find it pretty flaky sometimes...

Susan,

I did uninstall and then reinstall MS Active Sync and it
still does not work. I have also reinstalled Acrobat,
and it is now working ok.

As for the "Office is not Installed" comment. That is a
message box that pops up on Active Sync when it tries to
sync to Outlook.

Here is the exact text of the message:::
"Microsoft Outlook is no longer installed, so ActiveSync
cannot run. To continue synchronization, reinstall
Microsoft Outlook...."

Thanks again for your help...

Any other idea's?

Hi, Dave,

I've only found one other reference to this:

"I have heard of this alot with Pocket PC 2000 and Outlook 2002 and 2003 and
usually...it only happens after a upgrade of Outlook. most of the time the
trick is to remove AS totally, install Outlook and then reinstall (the
latest version) of ActiveSync. In most all cases, this fixed the problem.
Pocket PC 2002 as far as I have tested is totally compatible with Outlook
2003, but I have only had good luck with the latest AS (3.7.1)....My only
thought is use Program
Remove and get rid of ActiveSync and then try just reinstalling AS or if
that does not work, Reinstall Outlook and then AS. Be sure after each
use of the Program Remove (or Add) to reboot the system."

I dont' know if you did everything in that order, with reboots inbetween,
but you might try that, since AS tends to leave processes running on your
system and might not be cleaning itself up properly. If that doesn't help,
try posting to one of the PocketPC newsgroups, such as
microsoft.public.pocketpc.activesync, where you'll find more folks who may
be able to help from that end.

Susan,

Well, in short, it worked.

I uninstalled AS rebooted and reinstalled AS. It now
recognizes MS Outlook and sync's. Office Update still
does not work, but I was more concerned about the AS not
working. The funny thing is, everything quit working all
at the same time. It was strange.

Anyway, thanks for your attention and assistence. I am
very pleased with how well you helped me through this.

Thanks again,
Dave

Hi, Dave,

Fantastic. Glad it's working (except for Office Update). At least you're
patched and operational, which is most important.

Thanks for posting back--
