Does anyone know how to open an MS Publisher 2000 document
with MS Publisher 97?

Why is it that people don't realize that they will probably have a problem
opening a newer file with an older program? Rarely does that ever happen.

Because the large majority of other programs are forwards and backwards
compatible.

However, in saying that, not all use layout type programs which are often
and usually not compatible between later versions.

If you take a paint program and you manipulated a BMP and took it to any
other paint program earlier or later in versions you would not have an issue
opening or working on the file. That is what the majority of users see and
consequently expect all programs to be like that.

Let me ask it this way............what "major" program is backwards
compatible? I don't think I've ever run into any that were - but it could
just have the the unluck of the draw.

Substantially more programs are backward compatible than not.

Every paint program is always backward compatible.

Many software companies release updates to earlier programs so they can
import later versions.

Serif has just patched their version 5.0 of PagePlus they give away for
free, and must be hmmmm at least 5+ years old.

Backwards, yes, that's easy, but what about the other way? *That's* what I am
curious about.

Word 97 was built so that the file format could be fixed for all future
versions of Word

Don, however it has been reported the program "Psychic-Forecasting" is
disgusting unreliable and very flaky to useless.

Pretty cool. Too bad they haven't kept up with the practice across all of
their product lines. If they made Publisher 97 that way and created a
Publisher Viewer, this newsgroup would be soooooooooo quiet!

It would have been nice if they had included the ability to save down to
Publisher 97 in Publisher 98...
But some thing weren't meant to be.

If they had built on Publisher 97 instead of releasing that rip-off
Publisher 49 (Publisher 98 was only half a program) then by now Publisher
2003 would have been *AWESOME* with a full set of defaults that could be set
permanently or on the fly.
