MS Word 2000 opening problem

I recently installed a new hard drive in my notebook and did a complete
clean install.
Windows XP Home SP2.
When I bring up MS Word (MS Office 2000) and go to file - open My
Documents pops up and,
in a blink of an eye both My Documents and MS Word disappear. I never
had this problem before.
Going to My Documents and clicking on a .doc file brings up MS Word
without problems.
I have run msconfig and disabled all, rebooted and the problem
persists.
Registry Mechanic found no problems.

Sony GRZ610 P4, 2.00GHz
Win XP home SP2
768 Mb Ram,
80 GB HD

Any help much appreciated

I forgot to mention that I ran the repair tool in MS Word, un-installed
the whole Office suite, and reinstalled it. No joy.
