MS Word & Office 2003 documents are locked

[Trying New Stuff All the Time]

I'm submitting this on behalf of a friend who doesn't have internet access
but has a big problem on their hands...
MS Office 2003 Word has suddenly locked up so that they are unable to edit
or create new documents. They can open a file but can't edit or create a new
file. They are running XP Home and we attempted to run a system restore to
when the files were last usable but that has not resolved the problem. We
also uninstalled OFFICE and then re-installed but that too has not provided
any solution. There is no enabled option under TOOLS either so we don't know
what to do? We tried this with eXcel as well with the same results. Any
suggestions would be most appreciated.

Office either not activated or it's a trial copy that has expired.

The software is a legit version (NOT TRIAL) however they do not have internet
access to register the software....could this be the problem???

They do NOT WISH to connect to the internet with this pc and do not have a
modem installed as this pc is reserved for the kids use (high school) - only
legit software is used and no floppies or burned disks are permitted on it!!!
Any other suggestions???
