MSP 2003 to 2007 - Assignments changed?

J

John Horton

When I import a 2003 file into 2007 I am having all kinds of weird problems
with the assignment dates and then as a result task durations. It seems that
when a 2003 file is opened by 2007 all work is re-amortized across time. I
think what is happening is that the work is re-contoured!?!? As a result
durations and assignments are all goofy but start dates, work, remaining
work, all seem totally unchanged.

We build all of our files with generic resources and then replace the hours
as we go with the actual resource. What has happened is that we have zeroed
out a days work for the generic so we can give the hours to the actual, when
opened in 07 the assignment has remaining hours reassigned back to the start
of the task. The total hours and remaining hours still balance but durations
and assignments are all over the place.

Ideas? I need to convert dozens of projects from 2003 to 2007 but they all
have assignments at that have been modified.

Hi John,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I haven't come across this before. I think I'd check first with ensuring
that the calendars are identical in 2003 and 2007. Ditto with
Tools/Options/Calendar tab settings.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi John,

I just did a quick simple test and cannot reproduce what you note. I
have created tasks in Project 2003 with a combination of resources and
zeroed out days of planned work (Work) in the task usage view. When I
open the file in Project 2007, I am not seeing any shift of work.

Are you directly opening the file in Project 2007 or are you attempting
to export the data? There were some reports of assignment units
changing when a project 2007 file was saved as XML and reimported, but
it doesn't sound like this is your issue.

Can you give us some additional information about how you go about
replacing your generic resources with actual resources? Are you using
Project server?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

We hand key the Zero hours into the generics as we input the actual into the
specific resources. I am pretty sure that I have checked every darn setting
possible.

The one detail that I may have forgotten to mention is that the files are
created and managed in 2000. I work in 2003 when I have to but generally in
2007. There is no question that in the remaining work is being redistributed
- overwriting the zeros and sometimes changing the task duration. This is
going to make a migration to 2007 deeply painful

I tried to recreate it like Julie did and I see that I can not recreate it
from scratch with 03 & 07 so maybe the issue really is the 2000. So in short
when I open the 2000 file with 2003 everything seems as it should but when I
open the 2000 with 2007 the assignments are reset.

Hi John,

It sounds as though you have hit on the route of the problem. If you
open in 2003, save as 2003 and then open in 2007 is the problem still
occuring? Is there a possibility of staying on Project 2003 until you
can close the old 2000 files then starting anew in 2007?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
