Multiple Resource Changing

Hello,

I am using a resource John for Design work for 40 hours. I am trying to
change his work after he has started it for the last 10 hours. I want
resource Elaine to help him from now on for the next 20 hours (so that John
may work on Drafting for these 20 hours). After this, John would be back on
his Design work for the last remaining 10 hours, while Elaine would help him
too, that is, John and Elaine would do 5 hours each at 100%.

I have tried to change names and hours in the gantt chart (resources) but
Project does not allow me to! I can, of course, still add Elaine's name to
the gantt chart and add /edit hours of both John and Elaine.

Please help to solve this case in the best way. I am using Project 2003.

I am following your advice. I have been trying to divide my projects into
very small subtasks. But it turns out that my plan is at least 2 weeks ahead
of real time and for a 3-6 month period of operations. So, I am sure that I
do HAVE to CHANGE a few resources (names and/or hours) as the days progress.
And this is one of the challenges of most production planning and scheduling
in a variety of fields.

So, would you mind to describe a few methods to do this in Project 2003 in
such a way that I do not mess up the entire project sheet. There are at least
30-40 projects in a 6 month period.
