My Dictionary in Word XP is grey

There really isn't a "Word XP". If you are using Office XP then the
Word version in that suite is Word 2002.

Are you perhaps using Windows XP and Word 97? If so then the inability
to use the Custom Dictionary is a known issue cause by inability to
create Subkeys under the Proofing Tools branch in the Registry.

Here is an article that will provide you with the details:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?ID=KB;;Q257643

If that isn't the problem then please provide us with some additional
details. For example where do you see the disabled (grey) command?
What menu? What toolbar command? Are you trying to add words to your
dictionary or are you trying to spell check a document?
