I've already done what needs done in the System Preferences>Spotlight. It's
checked to search for mail items.

I copied/pasted the following quote from
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/syncservices.html

" Another user reported...I couldn't get Spotlight to index my mail and I
had all the pieces in the right spots. The only thing I didn't have on was
"Include Entourage item in search results" checked in the Entourage
Preferences: General Preferences> Spotlight. Once I did that everything now
works and my mail was indexed."

I looked in my Preferences: General Preferences and I see no Spotlight
checkbox.

Would I need to re-apply 11.3.5 AND 11.3.6?

Quit any Office applications and try re-applying the 11.3.5 combo updater
for Microsoft Office 2004. This should make the Spotlight option appear in
Entourage's preferences.

Hi Michelle,

I can't say for sure. I'm not even sure if the 11.3.5 updater will run since
you're already using 11.3.6. That being said, just give it a try; apply
11.3.5, then apply 11.3.6. If Office doesn't need to reapply any of these
updates, or refuses to do so, it will let you know.

I looked in my Preferences: General Preferences and I see no Spotlight
checkbox.

Sync Services were added in update 11.3.2. During that update important
files where installed. Check to see if you have "Microsoft
Entourage.mdimporter" in either System/Library/Spotlight or
~/Library/Spotlight. If you're missing this file, your Entourage install is
messed up. If re-applying the updates does not work, you might want to
consider using "Remove Office" then install from your CD then update. You'll
need your CD key!!!!

I have "Microsoft Office.mdimporter" in System/Library/Spotlight--not one
specifically for Entourage. I don't seem to have a Spotlight folder in
~/Library at all.

Would the "Microsoft Entourage.mdimporter" not have been installed if I
didn't have Tiger at that point--I was still on Panther?

I don't think Spotlight works in Panther. So yes, that could make a
difference. I believe that using "Remove Office" and reinstalling from the
CD then update is your best option to getting Spotlight to work with
Entourage.

Go over the check list here:

It's odd that I have the Sync Services preferences (which wasn't there when
I was on Panther, but did appear after upgrading to Tiger), but not the
Spotlight preferences.

I would think that when I upgraded to Tiger, it would have added either ALL
OS Tiger functionality within Microsoft or NONE of them.

By the way, if I DO do the uninstall, reinstall, updates, will I lose all
customization that I've done with different programs--preferences, toolbars,
etc.? Or is that still saved within preferences? Or are those preferences
also deleted when the program is deleted?

Even in Tiger some users had problems when the file "Microsoft
Entourage.mdimporter" was not installed. I had recently started a new OS X
install and found my copy of Office had not installed "Microsoft
Entourage.mdimporter" and the AutoUpdate application.

I have uploaded the files that belong in Library --> Spotlight folder for
downloading. I found that you had to use "Remove Office" then apply the
11.3.5 updater then 11.3.6 then 11.3.7. I believe that you can just drop in
the missing file into Spotlight folder and you'll get the preference in
Entourage to enable Spotlight without having to go through the entire
process of starting over.

If it doesn't work, then you haven't spent much effort in trying.

The Normal template contains some Office setting. See this page for other MS
preferences.

The Office newsgroup will better be able to explain other files that might
also contain settings you want to save.

Thanks for the file. Installed it and now have the preference.

Sorry if you thought I wasn't spending much time/effort trying. I
could/would have done the uninstall/reinstall/combo updates, but I was
trying to research beforehand what was causing me to have some of the Tiger
preferences, but not all of them. And what settings I might have to reset
if I did install.

I do appreciate your help though. Thanks again for being such a great
resource for the newsgroup readers.

No, I wasn't saying _you_ hadn't spent time trying, I meant that trying the
drag/drop for the files wasn't much effort so it was worth trying it out.

As evidenced by this thread, you have kept at it until we found a solution.
Many people would have given up early on and started to mumble bad things
about Microsoft.

Thanks for letting me know it worked. This is not uncommon for the file to
be missing as I myself experienced.
