Has this always happened with Publisher? Have you tried to uninstall and
reinstall it?

Perhaps not a virus. After reading some articles it very well could be you have
speech recognition enabled.

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods, as appropriate to your
circumstances:
Click the Microphone button on the Language bar so that neither Dictation nor Voice
Command is displayed. NOTE: If the Language bar is not displayed on the desktop,
follow these steps first:
Open the Regional and Language Options tool in Control Panel. On the Languages tab,
click Details under Text services and input languages.Select Language Bar, and then
click to select the Show the Language bar on the desktop check box.
On the Languages tab, click Details under Text services and input languages.Select
Language Bar, and then click to select the Show the Language bar on the desktop check
box.
Select Language Bar, and then click to select the Show the Language bar on the
desktop check box.

To turn off speech recognition, follow these steps:

In addition, here is the response I gave to your post in .programming.

A small child turns to Ed, and exclaims: "Look! Look! A post from

program (Office XP)
You could be running any version of Publisher, as it is unlikely that you
got Publisher with your copy of Office.
when I open it and all I get
is "code", written on pages, moving at a very quick rate
and not making any sense,(of course). Then at the bottom,
where it shows the number of pages that are being loaded,
it just keeps loading "pages and pages" of this "garbled
code stuff"!!!
It sounds like you are loading a document that Publisher does not recognise
as being a Publisher file. Hence, Publisher just gets the raw data from the
file (which looks like garbage) and is displaying it in text boxes, one per
page.
Are you trying to open a file?
