My summary task work totals are not adding up correctly!

I have updated the Actual and Remaining Work values in my project (in hours)
but the totals displayed in the summary tasks (which are the only ones upper
management ever views) are overstated. It's as if Project adds a new value
or the absolute value of the change to the existing summary value.

I have tasks that show 32 hours + 32 hours + 24 hours adding up to 356 in
the summary.

More than likely you have resources assigned to summary level tasks. This,
in effect, doubles your estimate. The problem will compound for summaries
that have summaries embedded (the problem will roll up).
