My word doc is corrupted - Please HELP

I have a word 97 document with normal text (only).
Suddenly when trying to open it, is has turned from a 3
pages letter to 181 pages non-understandable letters and
signs. How do I recover my document? I have tried to open
the document from "open" and then use "recover text from
any file". It did not work. Do I have any other options?
