my Word pictures turned to a large X

Dear Sirs, Help.
I am writing a family genealogy book. I am working on Word
97. I did scan a picture of each person and then write a
few pages about them. I was working on it doing my
editing when all my pictures in my book turned to a large
red X. Could you please tell me what is wrong. How can I
get my pictures back and stop if from happening again. I
am not nearly halfway through my book. corkie
