name of file changes to a "WRD" name

While typing a document in Microsoft Word 2000, the name
of my file changes for no reason at all. It always starts
out with "~WRD" and in this case it is "~WRD1504." This
has just started happening and usually happens with every
file or document that I name. I wonder if this is a virus
or what. Thanks!! Lisa

Where are you seeing this change of name? The format you describe is a Word
temporary file designation. Word creates a variety of temporary files when
it holds a document open. Some of these are in the document folder, others
in the user temp folder. Unless there is a specific problem here what you
see may well be the normal behaviour.

These files are hidden by default. Have you set Explorer to display hidden
files?

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I see this name change in the
upper left corner of the Word document where it shows the
name of the file and also says beside it "- Microsoft
Word." However, when I look in my directory for my file,
the original file is still there....I'm not sure if it is
carrying the new information I add to my document after
the name changes on the upper left corner of the screen.
I am going to check that the very next time it happens,
which will be today I'm sure, as I work on this program
every day with my job. What I always do when this happens
is go to "file" then "save as" and finally name the file
what I originally named it, and it will say "do you want
to replace?" and I always click "yes." I noticed last
night that when it changed the name to a "WRD" name, it
kept skipping pages. I type medical records and start a
new page with every record. I noticed that I had 75
pages, and I knew that I had not typed 75 patients, so
when I scrolled the pages, I noticed that there was a
blank page between every medical record I typed. It would
not let me type on the blank pages. It would let me go
back and manually delete each blank page, however. This
is not fun and definitely slows me down with my work.
Quite frankly, it gives me concern that it could be losing
some of the work that I do.

Regarding temporary file and hidden files, I am somewhat
familiar with what you are talking about, but this is
definitely new what is happening here. I have not changed
anything in Explorer where hidden files are to be
displayed....at least not intentionally.

I am not sure what the problem is here, but I don't like the sound of it
I suspect the document is corrupt. Display the paragraph marks (CTRL+*) then
select all the document except for the final paragraph mark and paste into a
new document. CTRL+* to toggle the display again.
Save that document.
Has that fixed it?

I see the name change at the top left corner of the
document, right after it says "Microsoft Word." After I
create a new file, shortly it will change from something
like f123103r to ~WRD1388. I am familiar with temporary
files and that Word creates these, but I have never had a
document just change to that while I am working on the
document. What I have to do is save file, then "save as"
and name it what I originally named it. It will ask me if
I want to replace, and I will click yes. This happens
with every file I create. This has only been happening
for a few weeks, so this is new. I have been working with
Microsoft Word for years and years, and I have not had
this before. I checked Explorer, and I do not have it
checked to display hidden files. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I tried (CTRL+*) and nothing happened in my
document....are you talking about revealing codes? It is
not just in one document. I deal with two or three
documents per day, and it happens with each document every
day. Who would you recommend I contact about this. This
program came with my computer about 2 years ago through
Dell where I bought my computer. Should I call Dell, or
should I contact Microsoft. Thanks for any help.

P.S. I apologize for repeating my question....I didn't see
where it posted my reply, so I posted again, and once
more....and now I see all of my replies I am just now

There is only a small number of things that you can fix to take Word back to
its install defaults. Let's try them all:

1. Close Word
2. Delete the data key from the registry - see

3. Rename normal.dot to oldnormal.dot
4. Remove any add-ins from the Word and Office startup folders.
5. If this Word version was part of the Works suite, uninstall the Works
add-in (Windows Control Panel > add & remove programs)
6. While you are in that area, run the Word/Office setup again and repair
Word
7. Delete any temporary files see

8. Run a virus check.
9. If you are running Norton AV, disable its office plug-in.

That will take you to a Word installation much as it was when you first
installed it.

If that doesn't fix it, I am stumped.

Microsoft owes no responsibility for an OEM installation of Word. Take it up
with Dell.
