Need one cell to read another from a different excel file.

I am wanting Excel to track a balance from one worksheet to another, but the
other worksheet is in another file. (i.e. inventory file + shipping log file
= open order summary report.)

- open both workbooks
- in the target cell enter the equation sign '='
- select the sourc ecell and press ENTER

The syntax for external reference is:
'path\[bookname]sheetName'!cell_address
example:
= 'c:\temp\my book.xls]data sheet'!a1
returns value in a1 of sheet 'data sheet' of book 'my book.xls' in c:\temp\
it can be used in any formula (almost... some don't allow external
references).
