Need to add auto numbering field

Please help! I need to find out how to get infopath to automatically
generate a 'record' number on the form each time it gets submitted.
Basically my boss wants there to be a automatic numbering that is assigned to
the document every time it is completed (basically giving it a document
control #/order number) that is visible but not editable once published.
I'm not sure if this matters, but ultimately I would like for the information
filled in on the forms to be stored in some type of database along with the
auto doc number. But I haven't even gotten that far. I will worry about the
data base part of this later...Or should I?

if the number only needs to be sequential (no other requirements) then i
have used a date time stamp by concatenating the year, month, day, hour,
minutes,seconds. to form a fairly reliable unique number. if it needs to be
more unique, you can try prepending an employee ID number.
