I have office 2000 on my Windows 98 system. I am getting
a new computer. I would like to install Office 2000 on
the new computer and then buy the update instesd of buying
a completely new Office software. I need the number from
my original jewel case befroe I can install it on my new
computer. The jewel case is long gone, several years ago.
An update would save me a couple of hendred dollars vs all
new software.

Any suggestions?

To install Office 2003 you will need the installation CD from you Office
2000. When the Office 2003 installation program asks for qualifying media
place your Office 2000 CD in the drive and browse to it. You do not need
to install Office 2000 so you do not need the product code from the jewel
case.

Suggest you keep the key for Office 2003 as well as the installation CD for
Office 2000 in case you need to reinstall.
