New Task Start Date

In MS Project 2003, I have gone into Tools -> Options -> Schedule Tab and set
the New Tasks to "Start on the Current Date". When I enter a new taskk into
the project, it defaults to the "Start on Project Start Date". Is there a
problem with this option in MS Project 2003 and, if so, is there a fix for it?

Thanks

Hi Tom,

I've not been able to replicate the problem.
When you insert the new task, is it inserted between two tasks that are
linked?

When you say "it defaults to the Start on Project Start date" are you saying
the check box in the Tools>Options> Schedule tab reverts back to that choice
or that the task is scheduled to start on the original start date of the
project?
I assume your project start date is before (earlier than) the current date?

I have tried inserting a new task between two tasks and at the bottom of the
project. I enter a task name and then just press the Enter key and the Start
column (the start date) is populated with the project start date, which is
set to 4 months ago. I am not sure what I am not doing correctly that it
does not take the current (today's) date.

Hi Tom,

That is a puzzler. Does it happen in a new project or just one specific
project? If you create a new project and set the Project Start date to a
date in the past, add a few tasks. Then go to Tools>Options and change the
New tasks start on option to the current date does that work?

I created a new project and set the project start date back to the begiining
of the year and entered some tasks. The new task start date was the project
start date. Next I changed the New Tasks start date in the Schedule tab
under Tools -> Options to be "Start on Current Date". Added some new tasks
and the start date was set to the current date.

So I am dealing with a project plan set up over the last several months and
I am not familiar with everything that has been done in the plan but I am
trying to troubleshoot it. Any ideas on how I can determine where the
problem is?

Thanks

After I wrote the last email, I went through the project again. I did not
realize that I was using a master project with some subprojects. While I was
changing the New Tasks option on the Schedule tab under Tools -> Options, I
was not changing it on the subprojects. Once I made the changes there,
things worked as expected. Thanks for listening. It sure helped. This
thread can now be closed.
