Hi,

I've developed my web site using FP2003 from my xp workstation, it's a very
simple web site containing maybe a dozen hyperlinks to files which exist in
folders in the xp box.

I want to upload the web site to a Win2K server which also sits on my desk
at work - but I want to have the files exist on the server not the xp box.

I can get the web site working mostly but when I click on the hyperlinks
there is no download offered, the win2k server can't work out where the
files are coming from.

So I tried creating folders on the win2k server and pointing the hyperlinks
there but still no joy.

Can anyone give me a steer here, please - what would be the best way to
achieve this. I have ordered "dummies guide to FP2003" but it won't be
here for a few days ( Christmas post !! ) and I really need to get this
finished quick.

Would be very grateful for any advice,

Krayten

Guessing on what exactly you're experiencing. Here's a few things to check:

1. FrontPage extensions installed on the server
2. The files you want to make available for download are imported into your
front page web
3. You're publishing the web site to the server via FrontPage
4. Permissions on the directories are properly configured on the web server

Hope this helps.

File | Import the files into your web, created links to them on a page.
Publish to the server.

Did you create a Front Page web as your first step (File
| New page or Web | Web) or did you just jump in and
start creating your web pages? From the description of
your problem I would guess the later.

You must create a Front Page web and all of your web
content (pages, images, etc) must be contained within
that web even if they reside someplace else on your hard
drive. Think of the Front Page web as a disk based
version of your eventual server based website. All of
your hyperlinks should point to content within that web.
When you publish to your host server, Front Page will
take care of the hyperlinks for you.

If you create hyperlinks to content outside of the Front
Page web (even if it resides on your hard drive), the
content will not be available from the server. If you
test these links on the PC you used for development, the
links will be found on your hard drive. Not so for others
accessing your site.

I hope this leads you in the proper direction.

Thanks for all the advice, I didn't know that I had to import the
target files into the web as well as hyperlink to them.

I really appreciate the help and for what it's worth I'm really
impressed by the accuracy of the replies.

Thanks again,

Krayten
