No FTP Controls

I

IdentityMan

I am a little, okay a lot, upset about this and it really burns my butt so please excuse me while I rant a little bit. Maybe you can help me? I hope so.

I have looked everywhere, tried everything, and there are no FTP controls that I can use to have many accounts under one FTP setting.

Don't tell me to go to the file menu, select Open, go down to the Modify or Change FTP settings because that DOES NOT WORK. If it does, I have not figured out how to get it to work so I can switch from one to the other without shutting down first.

Every single website I host is on the same server and therefore has the same IP address and the same FTP settings. the thing different with each one is their user name and password of course. This Frontpage 2003 DOES NOT allow for me to log out of one and into another.

I have to completely shut down Frontpage 2003 and start it back up again before it will allow for me to enter a different user name and different password for the same FTP setting.

The designers of Frontpage 2003 obviously did not intend it to be used by webmasters who actually are working on more than one website.

Is there any way I can work around this or am I missing something?

Have you tried closing one local site before opening another??

The publish too location is maintained separately for each "domain" in the system registry here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage Explorer\Recent Publish List

and if it is ftp, the publish too address is appended with the domain "user name"

Many of the protocols we work with are not very scalable. Consider
what an outdated nightmare NNTP is when using newsgroups.
This is likely the case with FTP even though I do agree that FrontPage
2003 really missed the mark in many regards as the developers tried
to catch up with DreamWeaver DMX.

So here's what I suggest. Visit news://macromedia.dreamweaver.appdev
and ask if DMX supports the functionality you are interested in. If anything
that may answer what I surmise may or may not be relayed to the FTP
protocol's abilities and may or may not put the onus of quality back into
Microsoft's lap.

The lack of functionality may also be related to FrontPage Server
Extensions and the way it uses what I believe it is correct to say
its own protocol which may be why people are warned not to
use FTP programs with FrontPage projects. I understand the
extensions are planned to be orphaned so the next version of
FrontPage may finally surpass DreamWeaver DMX. Cross-Fingers.

John,

In addition to Steve's reply, you also need to be careful on using FP web components if you are using FTP.

It appears that your hosting page and online application page are using FP forms, which appear to be broken. If someone submits the form they will be directed to this page:
http://www.identitywebdesigns.com/_derived/nortbots.htm

The reason for this is FTP will break the SE extensions, or you do not have the server extensions installed, so you should process your forms in a different manner (cgi, php).

Additionally, if the server is the same one as you use for IdentityDesigns.com it is an Apache/UNIX
server with FP extensions:
Server: Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 PHP/4.3.6
FrontPage/5.0.2.2634 mod_ssl/2.8.18 OpenSSL/0.9.7a

I also checked for http://identitydesigns.com/_vti_inf.html which exists.

If you have ftp'd to this server you have broken the extensions and they need to be reinstalled /
repaired.

After they are repaired always publish using http://IdentityDesigns.com or
http://otherdomainname.com as appropriate.

FP 2003 remote site information is based on the currently open site
- if you open each of your Different Local sites (disc based webs since you seem to want to use FTP), you should be able to have a
Unique Remote web site (FTP) associated for each local site
(you can not have multiple remote sites for the same local site unless you change the Publish information for each, each time using
File Publish)
See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825503&Product=fp2003
FTP sites Can Not be opened as local sites in FP (even FP2003)
You can only open them in FP using http mode (if the FP SE are applied and not corrupted by previous FTP)
- see all the other comments on FP SE and http mode in this thread
See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825528&Product=fp2003

Also FYI
Passwords used by FP are "stored" using IE
In IE use Tools > Internet Options > Security
Click on 'Trusted' and on 'Custom Level'
Make sure the selection at the bottom is NOT set to:
'Automatic logon with current username and password' and click OK
(this should require you to individually log in to each site using File Open S)
Click on 'Sites' and add your site URL in the 'Add this Web Site to the Zone', and OK, OK
- note: you may have to unselect the option: Require server verification (https)... to add your site
